Urinary Tract Infections are surprisingly common in Nigeria. Men, women and even children can be affected but in general, females are more susceptible.
A
study conducted showed a 39.69% prevalence, with women having
a 3 to 17-fold increased risk of acquiring UTI, than their male
counterparts.
What
exactly is a Urinary Tract Infection?
A
urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that affects any part of the
urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. It is
often caused by bacteria
UTIs
are more common in women, but they can affect anyone.
Why are
women more susceptible to UTIs than men?
1. Anatomical
Differences: The
female urethra is shorter and closer to the anus, providing bacteria with
easier access to the bladder.
2. Hormonal
Influences: Hormonal
changes, especially during menstruation and menopause, can affect the balance
of protective bacteria in the urinary tract.
3. Sexual
Activity: Intercourse
can introduce bacteria into the urethra, increasing the likelihood of infection.
4.
Pregnancy: Changes
in the urinary tract during pregnancy can contribute to a higher susceptibility
to UTIs.
5. Hygiene Practices: Proper hygiene is essential, as improper wiping
or the use of irritating products can contribute to UTI risk.
What are
the common signs of a UTI?
1. Frequent Urination: An increased urge to urinate, often with minimal
urine output.
2. Burning Sensation: Pain or a burning sensation during urination is a
typical symptom.
3. Cloudy or Strong-Smelling Urine: Changes in urine colour
or odour can indicate an infection.
4. Pelvic Pain: Discomfort or pressure in the lower abdomen or pelvic
region.
5. Urgency: Feeling the need to urinate urgently, even when the
bladder is not full.
6. Hematuria: Presence of blood in the urine, visible or detected
through laboratory tests.
7. Fatigue and Discomfort: Generalized fatigue and a feeling of overall
discomfort
Are UTIs
sexually transmitted?
In
Nigeria, UTIs are often mistaken for sexually transmitted infections but
in truth, UTIs are not contagious like STIs are. They are caused by the
entrance of bacteria into the urethra and other parts of the urinary
system. A UTI cannot be transmitted to one’s sexual partner.
UTIs
are often also called “toilet disease” due to the belief that they can be
gotten from sharing toilets. In truth, merely sitting on a toilet seat is
hardly responsible for a UTI. Holding urine, dehydration and
birth control are more common causes
